While one of the HART staff was volunteering at a veterinary clinic, a fat female cat was brought in to be spayed. When the doctor made the incision, the cat was found not to be as fat as she had originally seemed: she was carrying five kittens who were almost full term!

There is nothing that triggers the 'cute' reflex faster than kittens that can barely open their eyes! When the doctor said that the kittens were viable, the entire hospital staff pressed him to allow the mother to nurse them and one of the technicians agreed to become responsible for finding homes for all of them. At six weeks old, four of the kittens went home to continue to be nurtured until a permanent home was found.

The kittens adjusted beautifully to their new home and had a grand old time waiting for someone to adopt them. Potential adopters stopped by and played with them and helped socialize them. When they were old enough to be adopted, all four kittens had permanent homes. One of the families could not decide which kitten was more adorable, so they took two!

And many months later, the now adult cats are still enjoying their permanent homes! And they still have their rescue names.
