Happy Endings

Miko

Miko, a middle aged, white male Husky (with blue eyes), was brought to the Garrett County Animal Shelter in April of 2004. Initially, it appeared that Miko was depressed because he did not move much nor respond to affection. He displayed many of the characteristics common in neglected or abused dogs: unresponsiveness, depression, lack of trust. Feeling sorry for him, the HART Rescue Coordinator decided to take him out for walks. Much to her surprise, she discovered that Miko was blind!

If Miko was determined to be unadoptable, the Garrett County Animal Shelter would have to euthanize him. In an effort to save him, HART for Animals contacted a distant Husky rescue in upper New York State, who agreed to take him and give him the necessary medical care, as well as work with his introverted personality. After a stressful trip that involved a three-stop relay, Miko arrived at his destination.

Once there, the person in charge of the Husky rescue decided to keep him so she could ensure his quality of life. She took him to the vet who diagnosed Miko as being blind from birth, and only able to see a small amount of light and shadow.

Everything turned out great for Miko. He is doing great in his "forever home." He has become quite sociable and especially loves the new children in his life. He plays with the other dogs in his home, and even goes to parks and on outings to get doggy ice cream! Miko is very happy!
