How do I Develop a Strong Relationship with my Veterinarian?
Developing a strong, positive veterinary client patient relationship is key to keeping your pet healthy. We are happy to have your pet here at the Bredel Veterinary Clinic and get to know you, too! Both sides of the relationship need to work together to support the treatment and health of your pet. Equally, both sides have their responsibilities to make the relationship work.
Dr. Jessy’s and Dr. Weimer’s Responsibilities
Above all, Dr. Jessy and Dr. Weimer are responsible for the health and welfare of your pet. They both are governed by the American Veterinary Medical Association and by the Maryland State Veterinarian Practice Act. The standards for the practice of veterinary medicine in the State of Maryland by licensed and registered veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary hospital are adopted by the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (SBVME).
The governing body and laws are there to protect the vet, you as the client and your pet as the patient.
Patient First, Client Second
Dr. Jessy and Dr. Weimer are ultimately responsible for the health and welfare of your pet. This includes freeing them from disease, suffering, pain, and fear. They should explain the best course of treatment for your pet first, and discuss secondary options later.
Regardless of your financial or emotional limitations, the Doctors have to recommend what is best for the animal. Sometimes her recommendations could feel frustrating as a client but they are always considering your pet’s comfort as the top priority.
Medical Records
Dr. Jessy and Dr. Weimer have a duty to keep up to date, honest and accurate medical records of every treatment, surgery and vet check they perform on your pet. As the client, you can request copies of these records from the Bredel Clinic at any time.
Consent
As with all medical procedures, consent must be obtained. Since animals can’t talk for themselves, you as the owner must give consent for treatment. The Doctors will talk you through the options, benefits, and risks of any treatment or procedure so you can make an informed decision.
Although not listed as a legal veterinarian responsibility, Dr. Jessy and Dr. Weimer have excellent communication skills and keeps an open mind and have empathy for your pet and you.
Client Responsibilities
You can’t control accidents and emergencies involving your pet. However, you can control your pet’s level of welfare and suffering if they do develop an illness or disease. If your animal is sick or injured, do not delay in seeking advice from Dr. Jessy and Dr. Weimer – this could save your pet’s life.
Keep Records
Just like the us, if you notice something isn’t right with your dog or cat, keep a record of time, dates and symptoms. A pet thermometer can be a useful tool to measure your animals’ health. If your pet is performing a strange behavior, take a video of it as they probably may not repeat the behavior in front of the vet.
Financial Limitations
It is a good idea to take out pet insurance, so you are covered in the event of a serious accident or illness. If you are unable to take out pet insurance, then budgeting for vet visits is the best way to be prepared. We have yearly health plans where your pet can get checked up, have their vaccinations done, be weighed, teeth cleaned and worm/flea treatment for a fixed price per month.
In the unfortunate event that you are faced with the choice of a large vet bill, or putting your best friend to sleep, ensure you know exactly what you want to do before it happens. It’s better to be prepared then let your emotions overcome you in a stressful situation.
